Now here is a real nasty little Gremlin. Raphael is my favourite model from "The Born on the Bayou" box. So of course he was the first to get painted. I opted to go for a atomic green skin tone rather then the natural green/brown that has been the trend for some time now.
Raphael even won me a online painting competition last month.

I know its been a while since my last post. And you know what happens when you stop updating your blog? It dies. People stop checking it, they remove it from there feeds and soon it sinks down to the swampy bottom, the murky bog of the internet, the place where all the left socks go, the great big 404.

Well I don't know what will happen to this blog in the future, it depends a lot of what happens on google+, somehow g+ is just way easier to use, and I'm instantly en contact wit my readers (and friends). So I might just migrate totally?

Oh.. the header said Malifaux, well that's just the new buzz word, a way to get those readers that use google to find stuff to read my dying blog. Just kidding. Here a pic of my "Born on the Bayou box, assembled and ready to paint.

We are moving

We are about to move to a new apartment, that means that most of my stuff is now put aside in large brown cardboard boxes. That has got me thinking, how much stuff is actually necessary to own for me to be happy?

I'm a miniature collector a comic book collector and I also collect CDs and LPs so I own a lot of stuff and probably more than I can use on a daily basis. When not being able to game with all my models listen to all my records and read all my comics due to the shear amount of stuff, are they really worth owning? I don't know, I do not have the answer, but it sure has got me thinking.

For the next two moths we are going to live in a small wooden-house with only the most necessary stuff to get by, until we can move into a new apartment, I might have come closer to the answer by then or maybe not?

Ravyn list

So as some of you might know I'm going with Ravyn as my first Retribution caster. She has good melee capabilities and a very versatile spell list.
Deciding what caster to play is really the easy part, figuring out what to put in the army-list is a far more complex matter, for me anyhow. I have never been good at meta-gaming or havent really the time to put into such a project, but since I wont buy and paint every unit in the book I have to do a little thinking.

Just finished the base on the big guy this morning. That reminds me of Frank Millers Rusty the Boy Robot. What a great comic.
Well the paint job is nothing to brag about, but I think the model looks all-right. The big surfaces are a bit hard to work with. I haven really highlighted the gold, its just plain gold with some red and brown shading. I added a little twig to the base this time. I think it adds a little extra to the forest base theme.

I also started working on the Artificer, its just such a great looking model and Janissa also got some attention. I did about 5 highlight on her skirt, very zen.

Things I learned from this game:

1. Two heavy Myrmidons in a Ravyn list might be a bit much. The Manticore is a bit of a focushog and does not leave much for the Phoenix.

2.The Artificer is a very nice looking model, but is he worth his three points? In this game he was, he prevented the Gatormen Posse from making a decent charge and he killed a Totem Hunter in melee.

3. DEF 16 Gatormen are a bit much. When you opponent has a multi wound infantry unit with Iron Flesh, be sure to bring Epic Eyriss.

First I add different kinds of materials to the base to make an uneven forest floor.

Played a game of Cryx vs. trollbloods against Roar. Roar was the evil mastermind behind his jack heavy Mortenebra list, while I tried to control the Worldender and his Wall of Beef. Once again Roar pulled the carpet away under me with all his Cryxian shenanigans. Whats up with all those out of activation moving jacks? What is wrong with a classic Asphyxious assassination run?

Getting back into the Retribution of Scyrah

About a year ago I decided that I did not have the time or the drive to start a new army, so I sold off all of my Retribution models.
But then yesterday I feelt that I needed a real MKII army, both my Cryx and my Trollbloods have been with me since the beginning, I am no longer as exited about my old forces as I used to be.
So Im getting back into the Retribution, I contacted the guy who bought my models back then, and he still has them and was more than willing to sell them back, since he never really got the project going either.

So while I am waiting for the models to arrive I have painted up at test model. A Chaos Champion of Scyrah!

If the above statement is true, and I think it is, I should stop wasting my time on web-sites containing mostly words.

Forums and blogs seems to be the thing, when it comes to documenting hobby efforts, but it all becomes so very boring in the long run. I wish that miniature painters would be as creative when blogging as they are when painting. that way our hobby would be way more interesting, or at least the forum and blog part of it would.
Wargaming is not science, and should not be treated like it is. Lets be a bit more wild and creative now!

Peter is a fierce opponent who knows what he is doing. Apparently I cant say the same about me, although I would love too.

Chaos Terminators

Just finished my Chaos Terminators.
The Armour is Mechrite Red, followed by a layer of Scab Red and washed with Leviathan Purple and Red Ink and washed with Baal Red.
The trim is Mithril Silver, given a few heavy coats of Gryphonne Sepia.
The Helmets are Codex Grey shaded with Devlan Mud and Bloodstone.
Bone is just white and Gryphonne Sepia.

Haywire classic and friendly game

Easter means vacation and good times with friends and family. This Sunday was no different but still something out of the ordinary.
My friend and long time gaming-buddy Henrik came by for a game of 40K. What's so extraordinary about that you might ask? Well, for one it's been 3 year since we last went at it.
Back in the beginning of the 00's we met frequently, had a few beers and rolled some dice, but since then wives, kids and work has been taking the front seat row in our lives.

But Sunday we decides to re-live the glory days of our youth and emerge our selves in those past days of drinking, smoking and fighting, all in the good spirit of war-gaming of course.

We played 1200 point Annihilation, Henrik played Space Wolves and I Chaos.
As In the old days Henrik showed his superior skills and won the game, but we had a good time and promised each other to not let 3 years pass before the next game.

Professor Viktor Pendrake painted

Professor Viktor Pendrake has become a legend in his own time. He has passed down the wisdom of years in the wild by heading up the Department of Extraordinary Zoology in Corvis but recent events have pulled him from the halls of academia. After surviving enslavement by the Skorne he returned to the west to rejoin old friends and aid his allies in their struggles for survival.

I had this model standing on my paint-station for a long time before i actually puled myself together and finished him. It's a very strong and characterful model.

Last night was painting night, and I actually managed to get something done, so while my friend Roar put down some base-colours and washes on his Cryx I bases my Steel-heads, started another CSM with meltagun, put some more colour on a Kriel Warrior and painted a Forsaken from start to finish.

Plague Marine

Plague Marines are Chaos Space Marines dedicated to the Chaos God Nurgle. Within their corpulent and disgusting armour their bodies are bloated with disease, swollen with corruption and rank with decay.

I think I have managed to capture that description very well on this model.
The model was painted by glazing his jack bone armour with all kinds of green and brown glazes.

Notes: I won this one, but only just. Venethrax charged the Megalith, but was a quarter of an inch short, when meassuring my control area, I thourght I was within charge range.
Megalith and Baldur retaliated but failed to kill Venethrax due to Dragon Slayer and six focus on him. In the following turn Venethrax cleaved Baldur in two, game over.

Saturday afternoon gaming-40K

Once upon a time Saturday afternoon meant 40K, beers and cigarettes. Back then my friend Henrik was still living here in Aarhus, sharing a flat with his mates. The boyz had chosen to decorate the living room with a large gaming table, a shelf with lots of terrain and a fridge containing only beer. I would bring my Ork army and try to beat Henrik, who either played Chaos or Imperial Guard, back then 40K was in its 3.ed and I had no children and was still a happy smoker.

Now things have changed, Henrik has moved away, I no longer smoke and I have two children and 40K is in its 5.ed. But this saturday I revived an old tradition when I invited another good frind over to a game. Lasse is also a longtime gaming buddy and has just recently rediscovered his love for assembling, modelling and painting Games Workshop miniatures. The last time Lasse and I played a game of 40K was back in 2.ed. Since then we have both been into WARMACHINE, but now we are rediscovering what brought us into the hobby all those years ago.
Lasse and I played a 1000 point game with our new armies. Me with my Chaos and Lasse with his Orks. In order to keep things simple we chose to play a Kill Point scenario, so that we could focus on learning the rules. We did not smoke, neither did we drink during the game, but It was great fun to once again roll some dice on a Saturday afternoon. Chaos came out victorious, but the game could have swung the other way had I not stopped the Battlewagon early on. After the game we shared a beer and shook hands. Hopefully we will be at it again soon?

Bane Thralls 2010 painting guide

In MKI I used to play with 8 man units, but with MKII it has been time to update my Bane Thrall unit. It is always a challenge to add new model to a 3 year old unit. But I think I have found a good compromise where I tried out some new stuff but the models will still blend in.

Bane Thralls 2010 painting guide:
Armour:
Base: Boltgun Metal.
Highligt: Boltgun + Mithril Silver (50/50)
Shade: Devlan Mud wash, red ink + Badab Black wash, Umbral Umber + Badab Black wash. Pure black where needed.

Wood:
Base: Hammerfall khaki.
Shade: Gun Corpse Brown wash. Umbral Umber wash. Idrian Flesh wash. All washes are a mix of paint matt medium and flow improver.

Cloth:
Base: Thamar Black
Highlight: Coal black and Umbral Umber. Second highlight Coal Black + Umbral Umber + Trollblood Highlight.

Glow:
Base: Menoth Wjite Highlight.
Shade: Yellow Ink + Blue Ink, Im usin a mix that is a little darker than Necrotite Green. Add Thraka Green Wash under the eye balls.
Highlight: Menoth White Highlight, glaze Necrotite Ink mix. I'm not using P3 Necrotite Green but a mix of ink that has the same colour.

Skulls:
Base: Menoth White Highligt
Shade: Gryphonne Sepia

Trollblood Washing

I've been experimenting on using washes when painting Trollblood skin, and I just might be getting closer to finding a recipe that I'm satisfied with. What I'm trying to achieve is a way to paint skin far faster than the way I have done it earlier.
Normally I would basecoat with Trollblood Base and then shade with Umbral Umber, Sanguine Base and maybe Thornwood Green, I would then go on highlighting the model by two-brush blending in Menoth White highlight and Trollblood Base. It looks great but is far too time consuming.

What I have done with the Slag Troll, is base-coatet it with a 50/50 mix of Trollblood Base and Underbelly Blue, it has then been washed with Trollblood Base and Flow Improver, then with a thinned down GW Devlan Mud and a wash of GW Leviathan Purple, also thinned down.
The next steep will be to blend in the darker shadows and hopefully I can skip the highlighting all together?
This should give me a Warbeast that looks very similar to the others I have done, but with half the effort, but I guess we will have to see about that?

My Cryx army is also receiving a small boost this month as I went a bought the new Cryx battlegroup and two boxes of Ripjaws. Actually I only ment to get two Ripjaws in total, but since I thourght that the box only included one I ordered two boxes.
The question is now how many of my seven Bonejacks should I paint, and in what combination?

Chaos Rhino

It was my plan to have 1200 points worth of Chaos ready by October 1. That did not happen, but I did manage to finish a Rhino.
So now I just need to finish 3 Terminators and an additional Rhino to reach my goal.

The Rhino was base coated with P3 Traitor green, then stippled with P3 Bloodstone and P3 Ember Orange. The highlights was done by dry brushing the whole thing with Jack Bone.

Hi all
I hope that you have all had a nice and relaxing weekend?

This last week has almost gone by without me hitting the paint-station, I have simply lost interest in my current projects.
Its funny how what really draws you in one weeks can seem totally uninspiring the next? Well that's just human life for you in at nutshell.

But I have been indulging my two other hobbies this past week, when I got my new XBOX 360 S, I also got Dantes Inferno, Its very similar to God of War. Its not an amazing or ground breaking game in any way, but its mindless entertainment for now.
If you are into action games with a lot of extravagant violence and naked women, and its on sale go get it.

I have also been reading up on the latest adventures of the B.R.P.D, its a great comic that has spun of from Mike Mignolas Hellboy.
The B.R.P.D comic focuses more on the supporting characters from Hellboy and is more of a military task force meets the Twilight Zone comic, than the regular Hellboy comic.
Over the years the cast has grown from supporting characters into strong individual characters that you can really care about, it fun to read about how these misfits try to adapt to everyday life as supernatural investigators while fighting a war against giant frogs that are about to take over the earth.

I sometimes lose focus, my mind starts drifting and the grass suddenly seems much greener on the other side. This often happens halfway through a project, I don't know what it is, this weird thing that always seems to grab hold of me and many other gamers and hobbyists that I know of? Why cant we stay on track? And would it be any fun if we could?

So what is it that makes my mind wander? What am I'm thinking of? Well once and In a while a models pops up that does not fit with any of your existing army's, but it is a beauty full model and It just screams at you to be taken home and painted. Chaos Obliterators

I finally finished my Obliterators.
The paint job is a medium table top quality, but I think it works fine.

The models are base coated in boltgun metal and highlighted with chainmail. The gold trimmings are mithril silver with tree heavy washes of gryph. sepia wash. The flesh, I cant remember?

Well I got some really bat news for all you Gorshade the Cursed lovers, He got trampled to death by The Avatar of Menoth. I'm real sorry that it has to be me who is bringing you this bad news.

The Avatar was last seen entering the Army Transport that belongs to Roar, a fellow that has been know to support and protect a large group of religious fanatics.

I'm hoping that the right autoritis will soon apprehend this dangerous individual so that he can be judged, punished and enslaved by Iron Lich Asphyxious, who has been known to have the right tools when dealing with the horde of protectorate foot soldiers.

As it is with most undeads they will eventually return, and rumour has it that Gorshade has been seen on a nearby paint-station where he had his hair done. Apparently the trampling made him chip?

Kill Box

So tomorrow I'm going up against Roar and his Protectorate of Menoth army. Hopefully I'm going to win, but the odds are against it, you see the last two times we have meet Roar has beaten me.
I was just looking through my older posts and I realised that I had not filed or last game. The last time we played was on august the 15.
I played a Borka list and Roar was fielding Severius.

Like in our previous game I had a hard time tackling the huge amount of POM infantry, I did not get enough out of my beasts and I charged Borka into a trap he could not get out of. The Burrowers on the other hand performed very well.

I'm probably going to bring Gorshade the Cursed and a bunch of Bane Thralls tomorrow and see how that works out?

So I missed my Sunday update last Sunday. The reason? Major hangovers. I went to a wedding Saturday, and what a wedding it was. Great food, great people and lots to drink and eat.

This week I haven't really been up to much, but I did manage to spend some money. I got me a GW chaos sorcerer with a plasma pistol, plasma pistols and expensive characters seem to work very well, especially if you want to enter the warp early in the game. I'm going to name my sorcerer "The Black Emperor" and he is going to lead my Chaos Renegades "The Sons of Efrim" to battle.

I've also got me an Axer for my Trollbloods army.

Last but not least I'm thinking about doing an Gorshade the Cursed Bane army, but I'm still a bit unsure if I'm up to doing another 16 Bane Thralls? Well, more on that later.

To round it all up here I will post a few a pictures of my first five man "Sons of Efrim squad, my work in progress obliterators and my work in progress Fell Caller.

So now that I am a free man, I can start playing any other game I want without feeling bad about it. I can even say and think what I like and nobody will hold it against me, except for those that might disagree.

Wyrd miniatures seems to be a rising star with their unique style in miniatures and their crazy setting, I have always liked some of the sculpts, like baby Kade, but I have never thought about the miniatures as gaming pieces.

I might be slow on picking up on what's going on, but it seems that more and more people are getting into Malifaux, and I just might jump on the bandwagon.

And I do believe I have found my first Malifaux love, Ophelia and the born on the bayou box.

Hordes: Genesis, my going away event A.E.R

Saturday 24 of July I held a HORDES: Genesis event at the gaming club. Although I had proclaimed that I would participate in the event, I opted to sit it out when six players arrived at the check in.
Three games were played and Trollblood player and trollmeister Mads O. won all three games and became Hordes Genesis Champion.
This was my last event as a Press Ganger and I would like to thank everybody that showed up, not only at this event but everybody who has attended demo's, tournaments and campaigns through out the years.

Lich Lord Venethrax Tutorial

Here it is my Lich Lord Venethrax tutorial.

The model was first given a undercoat of GW Skull white spray primer, then a solid base coat of Codex grey.
With the foundation laid down its time to start washing the monster. The idea is to paint him using a lot of GW washes, but rather that just dipping the model I'm trying to use them as I would any other paint.

First wash with P3 Greatcoat grey and matt medium.

Second wash GW Ogryn flesh wash

With the basic armour done, it's time to paint the other areas of the model

The Tabard is painted using a mix of GW Goblin green and P3 Thamar black.
The gold is painted with GW Shining gold.

Wash the gold with a mix of P3 Bloodstone and Umbral Umber and Matt medium.
The Tabard was highlighted with pure Goblin Green and washed using GW Thraka green wash.
The Silver plaiting is painted with GW Mithriel silver.
His vents and any other glowing part in his armour is given a coat of Iosian green.

The tabard is shaded with Leviathan purple and the gold is given a highlight of Shining gold.

The silver parts are washed with Trollbloodbase and Asurmen blue. The tabard is given a highlight of goblin green and Thrall flesh.

Further shading is applied to the sword using Bloodstone, Ogryn flesh and Thamar black in the deepest recesses.
The sword is highlighted with a mix of Bastion grey and Menoth white highlight and given a final highlight with pure Menoth white highlight.

To finish off the model I paint the Glow eefct using first a thinned down Menoth White highligt on top of the Iosian green and then Im washing it using a mix of Necrotite green and yellow ink.
The Gold areas are given a deeper shading with a mix of Bloodstone, red ink and matt medium and a mix of Badab black, Beaten purple.

Venethrax skull and hands is first base coated with Menoth white highlight then washed with Gryphon sepia wash. The highlighted with pure Menoth white highlight and washed again. I repeat those steps until I have something I'm satisfied with.

There you have it a nicely painted model in no time.

Gen Con, the best four days in gaming, I'm not sure that I agree or maybe I'm just a bit envious sitting here in Denmark and reading about all the cool stuff that going on at Gen Con.

Fortunately we have the Privateer Press forums and Lost Hemisphere and Bell of Lost Souls to keep us posted.

Yesterday was Monday, that means the end of a four week summer vacation. During my summer vacation I have been busy updating my blog. That might just change in the coming weeks.
But I will make you all a promise, I will update the blog once every week.

From now on Sunday will be update day, coming up soon is my Venethrax painting tutorial and I'm currently working on a new Fellcaller for my Trollbloods, I'll make sure to post some WIP shots of him soon.

Nix the Warcaster Vs. Nixon King of Kriels

After reading fellow blogger and gaming buddy Hess' blog article about playing solo: "Playing solo – not just for the antisocial" I decided to give it a try.
At first the idea might seem a bit weird and über geekish, but as you venture down the road of self observing you will find out stuff that you had never thought of when reading forums, force books and cards, having the miniatures in front of you gives a much needed perspective of things.

So instead of working on the best gear-score or finishing that X-Box game you should set up a table, and when everybody in the house is sleeping start rolling some dice, it will be worth it. You don't even need good looking terrain since nobody will be watching, a few books a coffee mug, a tin can, a map of Berlin, and a few dice is all you need to create a hill, a few obstruction, a forest and a linear obstacle.

I for one found out how to deploy Burrowers so that thy wont take damage from AOEs, and that Cryx Helldivers still are better at digging then the pygs.
So if you need to test a new unit, is on vacation in Siberia or just feel like trying something different I recommend playing solo.

Look how those Burrowers are deployed, that's just crazy and odd looking.

Hordes: Genesis, my going away event

On Saturday I'm going to host my last event as a Press Ganger. After six years of Press Ganging I'm going to hang up the black shirt. It has been great to be part of the growing Danish community, meeting lost of new players and watch the scene evolve. But from now on I'm just going to enjoy the hobby on a more personal level.
Saturday I'm going to bring my Trollbloods and I'm going to participate in the event myself, I know that this is frowned upon in some gaming groups, but since I know all the guys that will participate its not going to be a problem. Most of them will probably enjoy sending me off with a proper spanking.

Since I cant use any Epics in the first round I'm going to field Borka, I know my current list has some short comings. but I think the list is fairly balanced and has some potential if I can just get it right.

Borka: Seems pretty hard to kill, has a decent spell list and a nice feat.
Dire Troll Mauler: A great animus and the ability to excel under Borkas feat.
Dire Troll Earthborne: A animus that can make Borka impossible to kill. Pathfinder and the potential to kill the enemy caster.
Pyre Troll: A versatile light beast, probably not the best in this list, but it is what I have.
Longriders: I'm not total sure how to get the most out of these. But I think they are best used as a second wave unit. They hit hard and fast and as everything else Trollblood, they are hard to kill.
Horthol: Well he is a nice solo and he makes the Longriders so much more effective.

Pyg Burrowers: According to the internet these are the best thing ever. I'll use them to engage the enemy early on. In conjunction with Moshpit they have the potential to kill something important.
Kriel stone and Elder: Makes the Trolls hard to kill.
Boomhowler and Co.: Since I don't have a fully painted unit to use as a tar-pit, Boomhowler and Co. has been hired to do the job. Since they are able to benefit from Borkas spells they just might do the job.

Swamp Gobbers: I had one point left, so I spend it on these guys, concealment is always nice. Unless you are playing against Legion.

For a fist full of Rage-MKII Trollblood action

The loosing streak that I had a hard time to shake off during last year seems to be back with a block rocking beat. I'm tasting the bitter pill of defeat and not victory, I'm laying face down in the mud while my opponents are walking all over me.
If you haven't all ready guessed I played my first MKII game with my Trollbloods last night and I was not very successful.
But that does not means that the game was a total waste of time, the fact that Roar is a great guy to play against and the fact that he brought four pints of Brown-ale to the match made it all worth while.

Highlight: The Burrowers that made a turn two charge into the Flameguard and stayed alive until turn five.
The Senechal that without much support killed of the Earthborne.

The not so good: The Earthborne that was almost able to reach Severius. Vilmon and my lack of magic attacks. Vilmon taking a swing at Borka.

The really bad: The Trolls have a tremendous staying power, but against a large infantry horde of righteous believers my numbers were just to few and my inability to remove large chunks of infantry was the main reason behind me losing the game.

For reference my army consisted of: Borka, Dire Troll Mauler, Dire Troll Earthborne, Bouncer, Stone Scribes and Elder, Pyg Burrowers, Boohhowler and Co., Longriders, Horthol and Swamp Gobbers.

What Warlock to choose with these models?

I just received the Trollblood MKII deck and after looking through it, I have decided to take it very slow with my transition from MKI to MKII.

Last year I decided to sell all my pre-P3 Trollbloods and that left me with a selection of models that might not be the most competitive. But on the other hand it could be fun and hopefully entertaining and enlightening to try out an army based on what I have, rather that rushing out and buying the latest releases.

Based on the sculpts, I like the following Warlocks: Calandra, both Doomshapers, Madrak World Ender and Borka (with some conversion work).

Based on the rules I like: Calandra, Madrak World Ender and Grissel.

So to lead my force of Trollbloods I will have to select either Calandra, World ender or Grissel.

My army must consist of any of the following models:
Dire Troll Mauler
Dire Troll Earthborne
Bouncer
Pyre Troll
Longriders (full)
Stone Scribes
Pyg Bushwackers (min.)
Hero
Horthols
Stone Scribe Elder
Stone Scribe Chronicler
and

Obliterators WIP

Last night I had planed to work on my Trollbloods, now that I finally received the new cards, but looking at my 10 Kriel Warriors with Weapon attachment and Unit attachment it just seemed to daunting a task.

So instead I started working on my Obliterates for my 40K Chaos army.
As you can see they are based on Chaos Terminators, I've tried to bulk them out by using plastic tubes and plastic card.

Back from Berlin with a FoW: Cryx review

So I'm back from Berlin. I could go on talking about how great a city Berlin is, but since this is my wargaming blog I will stick with the wargames related stuff.

If you are ever in Berlin you should visit Battlefield Berlin. I was hoping to pick up some new releases for HORDES, but it turned out that their stock was lacking a bit in that department. But if you are into all kinds of small miniature games Battlefield Berlin has it.

I picked up Forces of WARMACHINE: Cryx before going to Berlin. I had saved it for the 8 hour train ride. Unfortunately there wasn't 8 hours worth of reading in the book.
I think you should look at the FoW books as a compilation of old material, with a few new pages added, rather than thinking of it as a new book. The main story was a bit short and left me hungering for more, the rest of the book with the examination of Cryx military history was old new s and is mostly taken from Superiority. A lot of the illustrations are also taken from earlier publications.
If you already own all the MKI books you should really consider if the new FoW books are worth it or if your money is better spend on other stuff?
I did like a lot of the new artwork, especially the new Deathjack illustration and the new Warcaster art.
If you are new to WARMACHINE do not hesitate to pick up the book, but if you have been playing for a while you will probably find that the new books are old stuff beautifully gift wrapped.

I played a 35 point game tonight against Kean who plays Protectorate of Menoth. It was a nasty fight pitting two of WARMACHINES hardest hitting ladies, Skarre and Feora, against each other in Steamroller: Overrun.

After three turns of intense fighting I had to admit, that my chances for success, was crumbling like Thralls in a firestorm and I conceded. Kean did not seem to mind?

It was none the less an outstanding evening and I hope we can do it again soon.

WARMACHINE Homeparty

The evening was spend discussing the future of the Danish Nationals, how the new Steamroller works, having a few beers and of course playing WARMACHINE until 3.00 in the morning.

Convergence - My first MKII game

Ill just take a second here to give you a quick run through of my first MKII game. First off I think its great to finally have the new Prime and Faction decks, it feels like a real game again. The field test was fun and nessesary, but the PDF files were making my crazy.

Not only is the new rule book out, but Privateer Press has also released the STEAMROLLER 2010 tournament format.

I could not think of a better way to spend my afternoon then playing a game against fellow Press Ganger Lars Kriegler, with card, books and painted miniatures.

I chose to bring a Cryx- Skarre list and Lars fielded a Cygnar- Cain list. We played 35 points, the scenario; SR10, Convergence.

Turn one: Cygnar won the starting roll and went first. Cain ordered his troops into position, fanning out standing ready to counter charge any Cryx trooper brave enough to move into the control zone.

I did not feel particularly brave, so I moved my forces into position to charge any Cygnar trooper brave enough to move into the control zone. My only concern here was that I could not wait this out, since the Cygnar force had way too much fire power, I had to find a way to Cain.

Turn Two: One of my flanking Mechanithrall units got charges by Sword knights, my Bloat Thrall came under fire from Gorman, but survied due to pure luck and Cain stated firing his guns into my second Mechanithrall unit. The Cyclone put out some Dual Covering Fire so that my Bane Thralls could not charge his Storm Guard that set up camp in the middle of the table.

I charged what Mechnaithralls I could into his Sword Knights, my bloat thrall fired after Gorman with no luck, my Deathripper moved into position to arc a spell after him. Tartarus cursed the Storm Guard and killed one, the Bane Thralls that vere able to move into position of the Storm Guard without moving into the Dual Covering Fire AOE's from the Cyclone did so and finished of a few Storm Guards. Skarre moved forward, positioning herself behind the Death Jack, arced a spell through the Deathripper and finished off Gorman. After that she used her feat, if I could survive the third turn I could win the game?

Turn Three: A lot of hack and slash vere going on at the middle of the table, I lost most of my Mechanithralls and some of my Bane Thralls. Caine moved up front and used Thunder Strike on the Death Jack that Slammed right into Skarre, the damage was minimal due to her feat. She survived and it would soon be time to retailate.

I started by spending focus points to Shake off the Knock Down on the Death Jack and on Skarre.
I now had my chance to finish off Caine, all I had to do was roll 14 plus on a Sacrificial Strike. Skarre sank her knife into a Bane Thrall, I boosted the dice roll and came up with two 6 and a 5. Game over. Caine was gone.

Der gik 2009 og 2010 åbner op for forventniger håb og drømme.
Skulle man have et nytårs fortsæt, så må mit være at få gang i det indre liv. Jeg har været på en ørkenvandring med alt for meget elektronisk og underholdning kulturelt "dope". Jeg har sovset min hjerne ind i xbox spil, internet og nørderi med små tinsoldater. Skulle jeg forbedre mig i 2010? Måske?

En gang i mellem er det godt at tænke over hvad man egentligt laver og hvad det giver en? Jeg har i 2009 brugt væsentligt mere tid på min familie og mindre tid på mig selv og det har vist sig at det jeg troede ville være et offer, rent faktisk har været en gave.

I 2010 skal det være plads til at lege og nørde, men der skal også være plads til at udvikle mig som familie menneske og så vil jeg begynde at se nogle flere gode film.
Jeg har for længde siddet fast i en Hollywood sovs af middelmådige skabelon film, der underholder men ikke forundrer. Det skal være slut! Jeg har ikke set Avatar, men den hype der har været omkring filmen og ikke mindst prisen for en biograf billet har fået mig til at tænke. A new year, a new beginning

The year is coming to a close, and it is now time to look back at what has been and what will come.

2009 sees the end of WARMACHINE and HORDES as we knew it, MKII is coming out and hopefully it will change some of the problems that the last few supplements for the game installed. When Legends came out things just went off the scale, with far too many new rules and far too many rules on any single model and a power creep that some how made the game less fun. Methamorphosis did the same for some Hordes fraction but not all, Skorne became something quit different than what it was in Primal.

For me personally it didn't change that much, I keept on playing my Trollbloods and Cryx, much like I used to. But what changes was, that I suddenly didn't have as much time to play as I used to. None the less I decides to bring my Trolls to two tournament, the first went very well, the second was a total disaster, so after loosing six games in a row and with the knowledge that a new set of rules are under way, I have decided to put my Trollbloods on hold for now. That doest meant that I'm not going to play them, it just means that I'm not going to paint up any more models. The same goes for my Cryx.

So with the decisions to put those two armies behind me, its time to look forward and find a project for 2010.
For my 2010 project I'm going to adopt a different approach, instead of a "collect m all" mentality I'm going to make two list and paint up those models only, but more on that later.

Emperors Chosen IX

Does Emperors Chosen sound like it a 40K tournament? Well it is, but it is also Copenhagen premier WARMACHINE and HORDES tournament, or Im sure it will be.
Last weekend I went to Copenhagen with a few friends from the gaming-club and participated in what I would perceive as the best tournament I have been too this year. It was the first time that the Copenhagen based tabletop association "Emperors Pride" ran a WM/H tournament along with there 40K tournament. And although only 8 players registered for the WM/H part, Emperors Pride will continue to have WM/H as part of there tournament program.
The people I meet was all very nice and the food was beyond anything I have ever tasted at a tournament, so If you ever think about going to Copenhagen for a tournament this one should be it.

I used my Trollbloods this time with horrible result, I lost all six games, but managed to win the best painted single model.
I cant wait to see what MKII brings for the Trollbloods?

Trollblood burn out

In about two weeks I'm going to attend the Danish Nationals, and I'm going to bring my Trollbllod force. But I'm feeling slightly burned out. Right now I just have to finish Horthol, but the metal and the skin, not to mention the Kitari is just too much for me, it feel like I've done this a hundred times and I'm just going through the motions without any feeling of progress or satisfaction.

I Think its time to start a new project.

Magnus the Traitor New Edition

This Friday I had the opportunity to try out my ”new” Four star army. I’m calling it new because the models have being lying around for a while but never been used as an army, but with the MKII rules finally here it seem that it is worth playing. I tried it out agaings Lars Kriegler and his Siege army and won.
It consists of Magnus the Traitor, two Renegades, a Talon, a Mangler, Boomhowler, Eyriss, Gorman, and a Bokur.

Magnus has really reacht his potential with this new edition, by being able to upkeep his spells for free. His got a very deadly offensive spell with RNG 10, and can now cast it through his arc nodes without getting burned.

Eyriss is even nastier than before now that she has Stealth. Boomhowler is an all right unit, with some good abilities and a nice point coast, but still suffers from having big feat and no Reach weapon, but a minimum unit is still worth bringing.

All in all I think the army has some potential and I’m looking forward to playing it some more, at least until the HORDES MKII rules are out.

I´ll burrow for now, don’t know when I will surface but watch your back.

Battlegroup Bash V

After a Saturday with 12 hours of gaming I’m sort of reflecting on my first MKII event. And the first thing that comes to mind is this sort of warm and satisfied feeling, a feeling of hope and trust in things to come.

After a very intense year of qualification tournaments for the Danish Nationals, I thought it was time to try something different, to slow down a bit and remove some of the most competitive elements from the tournament setup.
And with the release of the Field test rules and idea was born. I would write up, or compile, a series of scenarios with a very strong emphasis on terrain, the Field test rules opened up a lot of possibilities with the a change in rules, that makes it possible to charge over rough terrain.

I made five scenarios, Battle at the Farm Stead, Skirmish at the Verdenheng, Still Breathing, Clear and Collect and The Council, all with a terrain pieces to set the mood and story for the battle.

I also chose to make a tournament script detailing who would meet who and if a player would be attacker or defender in any given scenario, all in an attempt to make sure that nobody would meet there own faction. The tournament script also meant that players would know who they were going to play against from the beginning. The games were not timed so nobody had to hurry; all you had to do was make sure that you finished all four games before 10 o’clock in the evening.

The no stress time limited meant that people could take there time flipping through stacks of paper trying to figure out the rules, so it was a very relaxed way for everybody to become acquainted with the MKII rules and factions.

All in all I think everybody had a great time with this experiment, there were only a few rules questions and they were all easily answered by looking at the rules document.
My overall impression was that everybody was happy with the new rules and it seems that the MKII rules were well received.

Tournament report conclusion

Day two started with a bit of a hangover, the old army stories told by Thomas and Lars the night before had carried on until the wee hours and I did not sleep too well on my inflatable madras. But what can you do, its all part of the tournament experience?

My first game of the day was against Lars and his circle army. Lars was the top ranking player at the moment, so I knew it was going to be hard. I choose to use my Grissel list against Krueger. I don't really remember what scenario we played, but I do know that I got seriously beaten. But none the less it was a great game and I enjoyed playing against Lars since we rarely get the chance.

Lars

The Last game was against Protectorate of Menoth and I was back with my Calandra list. It was a fairly even match up, with two slow armies fighting over board control in a classic Pendulum scenario. I was up against Thomas who I had never played against before, it's always nice to meet new people.
In the first few rounds my Champions took a lot of damage due to Severius a and his redeemer, and of course Ashes to Ashes, but I survived with plenty of models to make it into melee. A great game that could have swung both ways but ended in a draw due to the Win conditions.

Thomas

Going to Randers and participating in a tournament was an overall great experience, and although I did not win the tournament I did not lose all of my games, I finished fourth and got the best painted army award.
Calandra played like a dream, the ability to re-roll important dice rolls is simply game winning. Befuddle is nice to have and Star Crossed simply does an amazing job of keeping the Trollbloods alive. The only problem, with this kind of brick army is movement and flexibility. A lot of scenarios demand that you spread out and take points, and that does not suit the brick very well.
I'm planning on taking the list to the Danish Nationals, but adding Longriders and Horthol. I'm hoping that will solve the problem some?
So have I been Losing since Primal? Yes I have, but the last time I brought the Trollbloods to a tournament was back when Primal first came out and I lost five out of six game. So in my opinion, with the stuff from Evolution our chances for success has vastly improved. Losing is not a problem, losing all the time is a big annoyance but that did not happen so I'm a happy troll.
